Some of the best advice for a recovering addict is how to stay sober after rehab. You have been through the rehab program, living daily in a structured, drug-free environment and now you are out of the rehab and back home. It can feel a little strange at first, but eventually you may find yourself falling back into old habits. This could be a good thing, or not, depending on what you are thinking and doing. There are definite prerequisites that you must follow to stay sober and drug-free.
Now that you are out of rehab, it is going to be up to you to stay clean. You will not be supervised day and night by rehab personnel, so you will have to stay focused on your recovery and the goals that you have set for the future. Don’t take your mind or your eyes off of the goal of living a sober life. Below are some useful tips to teach you how to stay sober from drugs and how to stay sober after rehab:
- Try to keep your life structured so that you know what has to be done each day without putting too much pressure on your self. Don’t make unrealistic goals that you know you will not be able to keep. Just take one day at a time and do the best you can for that day.
- Build a great support system for yourself with family and friends that support your recovery and will be there for you. Surround yourself with other sober people and start to partake in activities with them. Find a good support group and attend the meetings often, especially when you feel tempted or vulnerable.
- Give your self time each day to rest and just be thankful for what you have and where you are going. Practice your faith and experience God’s love, peace and plan for your life. You will be empowered and filled with hope when you allow God to lead you in the right direction.
- Avoid all contact with people who use drugs or drink too much alcohol. Remove all drug paraphernalia from your home, and avoid places that remind you of your former life. If you must attend an event where there will be drugs and alcohol, bring a trusted friend with you to act as your body guard in case you get tempted. If non-alcoholic beverages are not going to be served then bring your own. Don’t allow anyone to intimidate you to use drugs or drink alcohol. Your life is at stake here, and you don’t owe anyone an explanation for your behavior. Just gently say “no thank you” and if they can’t take the message then remove yourself from their presence.
- Don’t allow yourself to become lonely and start to dwell on negative things from the past. This type of behavior can cause you to become depressed and you may be tempted to use drugs again. Negative thoughts are not a part of your new mindset. Stay connected with other people, stay positive and enjoy life.
- Remember the acronym HALT= Hungry, Angry, Lonely and Tired, and avoid them all. Keep yourself well hydrated and eat nutritious meals to strengthen your body and mind. Begin an exercise routine, and make sure to get plenty of sleep.
- Surround yourself with people you enjoy being with. Keep a positive attitude and get rid of every ANT= All Negative Thoughts. Begin the process of forgiving all the people that hurt you or let you down. And forgive yourself too. You cannot live a happy, healthy life if you harbor resentment and un-forgiveness. Let it go and be free from all negative thoughts and emotions.
You are re-inventing your life and you want to make it the best it can be. Do the things that you enjoy and value. Go back to school and get that degree, take a vacation, join a gym, or learn a new hobby. Do what makes you happy, and do it with people who care about you and are fun to be with. Be grateful for what you have already accomplished and for a future that looks bright and promising. And last, but not least, one of the best tips for staying clean is to keep your focus on your goals and be happy.
