What is Paint Huffing?
This would be categorized as an inhalant. Inhalants tend to include chemicals that are found within household cleaning products and other products, such as cleaning fluids, paint, glue, lighter fluid, amyl nitrite1, nail polish remover, paint thinner, and paint– to name some. These dangerous chemicals, which were not at all intended for human consumption, are typically sniffed or actually “huffed” (huffing is the act of inhaling any vapors). Oftentimes, addicts will spray the chemical in a bag and begin huffing the chemicals that are in the bag. Inhalants severely affect the brain of the person who is huffing.
Some of the side effects of paint huffing are just awful. When fumes or substances are inhaled, huffed, or sniffed via the nose or mouth, they can definitely cause permanent mental and physical damage. When this takes place, the body is being starved of oxygen and forces the heart to irregularly beat and much more rapidly. It is possible for addicts who use inhalants to lose their sense of smell, suffer nosebleeds, and nausea. They may develop lung, liver, and kidney problems, too. Continued use of inhalants can lead to reduced muscle tone, mass, and strength. Inhalants can cause addicts to become unable to walk, think, and speak normally. When the extremely toxic fumes are inhaled directly through the sinus, much brain tissue damage is caused. A paint huffing addiction can be deadly.
