How to Naturally Increase Serotonin Levels

Boosting Feel-Good Neurotransmitters

The unfortunate reality is that individuals abuse drugs and alcohol because it gives them a high and makes them feel good. Unfortunately, this perpetuates dangerous compulsive behavior which leads to substance abuse and addiction. This pattern, in turn, begins to control your life and every aspect of it. Once you are addicted to drugs or alcohol, it takes professional treatment in order to overcome and make a full rebound.

Luckily, there are natural and holistic ways of boosting endorphins, a natural ‘feel good’ hormone that your body produces in response to something that is positive. When you are naturally able to produce enough serotonin and endorphins to feel good, you naturally get a sort of ‘high’ as a result. Think of a time were you were pleasantly surprised by something, perhaps it was a holiday bonus from work that you didn’t expect. The overwhelming feelings of happiness can create a euphoric and happy feeling.

Natural Ways to Boost ‘Feel Good’ Hormones

There are various ways in which to boost your feel-good hormones and this will vary for each individual. An activity or hobby that positively stimulates the brain can help you enjoy a natural high that is produced by your very own body.

Some ways in which you can increase your level of happiness in order to boost natural happy chemicals are:

  • Exercise
  • Spend some time in the sun and get some vitamin D
  • Meditate
  • Partake in equine therapy
  • Listen to music
  • Do something that makes you laugh (comedy show, playing with a pet, etc.)

With partaking in these ways to naturally boost your mood, you are not running the risk of imminent addiction, as is the case with substances of abuse. You cannot overdose on a natural high and it is a safe way to still enjoy yourself while not resorting to drugs or alcohol in order to feel the effects.

Brain Chemistry

The chemical makeup of the brain is extremely intricate and there are so many contributing factors in what affects the highs and lows that we experience. There are many external influences that impact and affect how we feel. While the thought of something may make us feel sad, the rush of endorphins after an intense and successful workout can make us feel amazing. This all relates to brain chemistry and the hormones and chemicals that are released in response to something.

The dangerous think about substances of abuse is that they amplify ‘feel-good’ chemicals to an exorbitant level; a level that simply cannot be achieved naturally. This is why individuals become hooked on drugs and alcohol; because they make us feel like we are on ‘cloud nine’. Since the high is temporary, these individuals will continue to use and abuse substances in order to maintain that high. When they are not using, they may begin to experience withdrawal symptoms. In order to mitigate this, they continue to use.

By engaging in activities that give you a natural high, you are taking care of your own wellbeing without having to rely on substances of abuse. If you are struggling with drugs or alcohol, treatment is available.
