The Benefits of Having a Sponsor in Addiction Recovery

Having Support is Essential to Long-Lasting Sobriety

When it comes to sustained sobriety, one of the most important factors is having a solid support group and network of individuals who are there for you. When individuals have the help they need at their most vulnerable times, they are more likely to maintain their sobriety. It’s advised that every recovering addict has a sponsor available to them after they have completed their addiction treatment program.

Sponsors and professional therapists help to ensure that you are on the right path post-treatment. They meet with recovering individuals regularly in order to ensure that they are maintaining their sobriety. Sponsors are advocates of your recovery and will do everything they can to keep you on the right path. They understand that relapse is often part of recovery and they are available to help ensure that if relapse has occurred, that you get immediate help.

Growing a Network of Sober Individuals

A sponsor will help to assist you in developing a network of sober individuals who are all in the same position as yourself. Being around those who are going through similar struggles as yourself and are striving for the same goals as yourself is a great way to connect while also not feeling the pressure to use. When you are around positive individuals whose recovery intentions are the same as yours you are much more likely to sustain your sobriety.

A sponsor will also help to set up any sort of recovery meetings post-treatment which could be AA, NA, and other support group meetings. Ensuring that you have a set schedule of meetings throughout your initial time outside of treatment is crucial as when individuals are first released from treatmet they are most vulnerable to relapse.

When individuals have a place to turn when they are struggling, they are more likely to take their recovery with utmost seriousness. Many recovering addicts do not have relationships with their family and they have lost touch with their friends due to their addiction. Having a sponsor and listening ear available that has their best interest at heart helps them make the right decisions in times of vulnerability.

An Advocate for Your Recovery

A sponsor is a true advocate for your recovery and will do everything they can to help you maintain your sober path. Having someone to speak to when you are not feeling your best can help to truly change your mindset and motivate you to continue on a sober path.

The transition from addiction to sobriety is not an easy one but with the proper help and support, individuals will find the transition easier to handle. Your sponsor will be the voice of reason and will help you make sound decisions as it relates to your sobriety. When you experience feelings of temptation or the urge to use, having an individual there to bring you back to reality and to remind you that you must maintain your sobriety is extremely valuable.

If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction or has gone through treatment and is re-entering the world as a sober individual, having a sponsor is necessary.
