Locating and Healing the Root Cause of Addiction

The Foundation of Addiction Must be Confronted

When an individual is struggling with an addiction to drugs or alcohol, there is often an underlying and root cause as to why. Locating the root cause of addiction can lead to a healthy and successful recovery that will render long-lasting sobriety. In order to locate the root cause of an addiction, an assessment and evaluation must be completed.

When an individual is able to speak about their struggles and past trauma with a counselor or therapist, the root cause of the addiction may be revealed. Once this is determined, the proper treatment and course of action can be taken to help the individual heal on all levels. When the foundation of the addiction is under control, the individual can begin to focus on recovering from their addiction. Having a solid base to build recovery will help the individual obtain sobriety easier.

Past Experiences Influence Addiction

Individuals who have had either trauma or an unpleasant past are more prone to the disease of addiction. This is because a lot of people who have past trauma try to self medicate in order to suppress their symptoms. Self-medicating is an extremely dangerous way to manage symptoms as it can lead an individual into a full-on addiction. Getting help as soon as you realize that there is a problem can help you get better as soon as possible.

Dual diagnosis is a type of treatment modality that works to target both the underlying mental health disorder as well as the addiction. When both disorders are being treated and managed, the individual can focus on their recovery. When the root cause of the addiction is brought to the forefront, individuals are able to work through it so that they can begin to lead a healthy, fulfilled, and productive life.

When an individual has past trauma, they may cope with it in the form of other addictions as well. This can include an addiction to:

  • Videogames
  • Gambling
  • Shopping
  • The internet
  • Food

An addiction does not always imply an addiction to drugs, alcohol, or substances of abuse; it can apply to anything that gives a feeling of pleasure to the individual. In order to stop these often unhealthy and compulsive habits, counseling and treatment are required.

When Trauma is the Root Cause

Addiction may occur in those who have past trauma because the addiction makes the individual feel better. If their addiction happens to be food, they will continue to eat often and overeat as a coping mechanism. It’s important that those who have adverse experiences get the help they need early on as neglecting getting assistance can make the individual spiral into a very dangerous addiction.

If you or someone you know is struggling, help is always available near you. Getting help in a timely manner can be the difference between leading an unhealthy and dangerous life and a fulfilled and content one. The sooner you get help, the sooner you are able to reach your personal goals and live a life that is worthwhile.
