Recovering from drug addiction makes for an interesting and challenging journey that can keep you on your toes at times. Once you have finished your treatment at the drug rehab center and you go home, you are pretty much on your own. Sure you will still see your therapist or counselor, and attend support group meetings, but life from here on it will be entirely up to you. We all have our ups and downs in life, but for a recovering addict stressful events can be particularly trying, and it is especially during these times that you will want to know how to stay clean after detoxing from drugs.
When you have a plan in place that maps out your top priorities, you will have an easier time navigating the good and not-so-good times of life. Deep-set dysfunctional thoughts, emotions and behavior patterns may have to lead you to do drugs initially. Now that will all change because you are becoming more aware of your thought processes and how they affect your choices in life. Your paradigm shift to positive healthy thinking will set you free in more ways than you ever could have imagined. The first thing to remember is to avoid all negative and unhealthy thinking.
- To reduce the potential for relapse, you will have to avoid all high-risk people and situations. Plan ahead and make lists of dialogue to use when you have to be in a high-risk encounter with someone or at a party where there is drug and alcohol use. Always have an exit strategy in place so you can easily remove yourself from these types of situations and people. If you must attend one of these functions, bring a trusted friend along so he can protect you from yourself if you begin to weaken.
- Part of staying clean and sober is being honest with yourself and being in tune with your feelings. Don’t put unrealistic expectations on yourself and become stressed-out. Take one day at a time and do what you can each day. Make a list of things you want to do for the week, and try to do as many as you can; it’s okay if you don’t get them all done. Also, don’t let other people push you to do things you are not ready to do yet. Everything will come in its own time, just keep moving forward and stay focused on your list of goals.
- Never underestimate the power of the acronym HALT – hungry, angry, lonely and tired. Make sure that you eat nutritious meals and are well hydrated. And getting the proper amount of sleep and exercise will also do you a world of good too. Make an effort to get out and socialize with family and friends. Staying isolated and alone can lead to sadness and depression, which could make you think about taking drugs again. Avoid this like the plague.
Taking care of yourself holistically in body, mind, and spirit will help you stay clean after detoxing from drugs. Your life will be enriched when you learn how to love yourself enough to meet all your needs in a healthy, sober way. In time, learning how to stay sober will become second-nature and you will be amazed at how far you have come in your recovery.
