Laying the Foundation for a Healthy Recovery

Recovery Takes Time and Patience

When you have completed your treatment program and are ready to re-enter the world, you may feel anxious and scared. Laying the foundation for a healthy recovery will ensure long-term success in sobriety. Ensuring that you have a proper recovery plan in place will allow you to have a better quality of life while also supporting your mental health.

Make a Daily Plan

A core contributor to a successful recovery is crafting a daily plan or itinerary. If you notice that there are spots of free time throughout your day, it’s best to fill those in with a hobby or activity as free time during recovery could lead to boredom which could result in relapse very quickly.

It’s important that you know how to manage triggers when there is temptation. Trigger management is a very important tool as relapse in recovering addicts is always possible. Coping mechanisms will help you better manage your sobriety and will allow you to handle the urge to use when there is pressure around you. Recovery management strategies can help you live a life that is substance-free.

Avoiding certain social crowds that you would formerly use substances with is a must when wanting to sustain your sobriety. These individuals may pressure you to use and they may not be so supportive of your decision to seek help. Eliminating toxic people from your life is essential as these individuals do not have your best interest in mind.

Lifestyle Changes

In order to lay the ground for a successful recovery, you must also modify your lifestyle. This means getting more sleep, being more active, going to cognitive behavioral therapy, and eating a healthy diet. These are all aspects that can affect your mood and your attitude toward your recovery in a positive way which means they should be taken very seriously.

Taking time for yourself and engaging in mindful activities is also beneficial for a successful recovery. Massage therapy, acupuncture, and equine therapy are all things that you can do during a time of self-care.

Remember that recovery is a slow and steady process and you must be patient and not give up on yourself. Continuously remind yourself how far you have come and what you have accomplished. Keeping a detailed journal of your journey toward recovery will help you stay motivated and positive.

Over the course of time, your recovery will become easier as you will learn the tools and strategies necessary that will aid in your long-term success. With a strong support system, such as family, friends, and support groups like AA and NA, recovery is made simpler. You are not alone in this journey toward recovery; there are people around you who love you and want to see you get better.
