Southwest Florida Addiction Treatment

When you or your loved one is struggling with addiction, it’s important to know where you can turn for help. In Southwest Florida, addiction services at WhiteSands Treatment are the bridge between substance abuse and long-lasting recovery. Our experts know that it’s essential to prepare you for your unique journey toward recovery and provide you with the tools, insight, and support you’ll need to achieve lasting sobriety and prevent relapse. That’s why we use objective, measurable criteria to guide us in the care and treatment of each patient.

Referral to a specific level of care is based on a careful, individualized assessment of each person. The goal is to place the patient at the most appropriate level of care that is the least intensive but meets the treatment objectives while providing safety and security. This means that a patient can begin at a more intensive level and move to a more or less intensive level of care depending on his or her individual needs.

Each patient receives a psychiatric evaluation upon admission to WhiteSands Treatment. When deemed appropriate, a psychiatrist and staff members see the patient for follow-up evaluation and treatment while in the medical detox and inpatient rehabilitation program. In addition to addiction treatment, our staff can treat co-occurring mental health disorders like anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and bipolar disorder. Medication management is integrated into the treatment plan when appropriate, and intensive case management is a part of all levels of care.

Flexible Lengths of Stay

The overall philosophy and treatment programs of WhiteSands are based on a 60- to 90-day treatment stay that includes both inpatient and outpatient levels of care; however, we recognize that lengths of stay will vary, and some patients are only able to complete a seven-day stay due to various issues such as time away from home, cost, family obligations, work obligations, and insurance coverage. Based on these considerations, we have created a flexible 60-day Southwest Florida addiction services program that combines inpatient and outpatient treatment stays. For some patients, this means seven days of detox and 53 days of intensive outpatient treatment, but the majority of our patients chose to stay in our 35-day inpatient program followed by 25 to 55 days of intensive outpatient treatment, during which they can reside in their home or in a recovery residence.

It is important to note that once a patient graduates the 60-90 day inpatient and intensive outpatient program, they become a part of the WhiteSands Recovery Program, which supports them in maintaining long-term sobriety with continued outpatient therapy and follow-ups with affiliated medical providers experienced in addiction treatment.

Levels of Care

Inpatient Detox (Medically Assisted Detox)

Our detox program generally lasts five to 10 days and begins at the point of admission. We know that entering treatment may be stressful or emotional, so we work to make our admissions process as comfortable and quick as possible. Upon arrival, each patient will meet with an admissions coordinator and nurse to answer basic questions, check their vitals, and complete a urinalysis to confirm that we’re the right fit for them. The patient then signs consent for treatment and other basic forms and will be brought to the comfort of their private bedroom. The rest of the admissions process occurs in the bedroom to ensure privacy. A complete medical history and physical will happen within the first 24 hours of admission.

Using a combination of medications, our board-certified addictionologist will meet with you every day throughout your detoxification to ensure you are as comfortable as possible and make any necessary adjustments to your treatment. Your safety and comfort are of the greatest importance to us through the medical detox process. At WhiteSands, we believe in staff always being available to patients. That’s why we have a minimum of two nurses working each detox station at all times and a behavioral health technician outside the detox rooms to provide any needed additional support. A patient only has to open their door and request help. Each detox patio area, located directly outside the detox bedrooms, has comfortable seating and is stocked with food and drinks so patients do not have to walk far to find food or beverages.

Residential/Intensive Inpatient Treatment

Our Southwest Florida addiction services residential program generally lasts 14 to 21 days, with patients getting four to five individual or family sessions per week with their primary therapist. During this stay, they’ll have daily check-ins with their Life Skills Guide and begin completing a nightly Life Skills planning worksheet. Patients will write their daily schedule every morning, including sleep, exercise, therapy, and nutrition goals. Patients will see medical and psychiatric providers at least once per week to adjust medications or address new or ongoing symptoms, and our nursing staff will evaluate them daily during their inpatient rehab. They will have the option of eating nutritious meals in the patio area with their peers or in the privacy of their own bedrooms, and they will have nightly access to their electronic devices.

Day-Night Treatment

Our day-night PHP (partial hospitalization program) generally lasts 10 to 20 days. It’s a transitional phase of treatment where patients are beginning to move back into activities they would engage in at home and experience increasing responsibilities. During the day-night addiction treatment program, patients receive a reduced level of services with the stepped-down level of care; however, they continue to have access to some of the same amenities as our residential treatment program. For example, patients typically attend group therapy five to six days per week instead of seven. They can live in community housing or return home and commute to one of our outpatient locations for daily treatment. Once they complete this treatment portion, they’ll be introduced to their outpatient therapist and primary care physicians and be prepared for a smooth transition into the next stage of their treatment and recovery.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

The intensive outpatient program (IOP) can last anywhere from 30 to 90 days, with patients participating in three hours of groups three days or nights per week and individual sessions with a therapist. They’ll also have follow-up appointments with a psychiatrist and medical provider. During this phase of treatment, patients will live at home or in a recovery residence and use their IOP programming to assist them in having increased levels of support during this early time in recovery. Patients can have full-time or part-time work during this phase of treatment and resume many of their old responsibilities. Their Life Skills Guides will continue to check in with them daily for 90 days. The WhiteSands Recovery program allows patients to continue seeing their therapist for individual sessions and psychiatric and medical providers for a lifetime. This provides greater continuity of care and medical providers who know a patient’s history.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) Program

We offer a MAT (medically assisted treatment) program for patients who have difficulty entering inpatient treatment for an extended period. MAT treatment is for those struggling with opiate addiction who have the ultimate goal of being off all addictive substances but who are unable to enter a detox program or detox from opiates within one to two weeks. Our MAT program allows patients to taper off opiates slowly while seeing a medical provider weekly. During MAT, patients are encouraged to participate in IOP or outpatient therapy.

Southwest Florida Addiction Treatment ProgramsWhat Is a Typical Day Like in Residential Treatment?

The theme at WhiteSands Treatment is that you are a patient from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and from 4:30 to 11 p.m., you become a guest. Once you become a guest, you can relax and enjoy the amenities. Guests can enjoy whichever activities or amenities they wish, whether exercising, partaking in activities and hobbies, or simply hanging out in their private room where they can watch TV and stay connected with friends and family.

Patients will wake up at 6 a.m. or earlier each day and can exercise in the gym, take their medications, eat breakfast, and plan their daily agenda for their Southwest Florida addiction services treatment. They attend five groups from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and see their therapist or medical providers. They’ll have short breaks between groups and a lunch break, and they’ll get an hour of scheduled recreation to use the gym, swim in the pool, or relax in their bedrooms.

After 4:30 p.m., patients become guests and can choose from a variety of recreational activities and recovery meetings. Their personal electronic devices will be waiting in their rooms, and they’ll be able to check in with family and unwind from a full day of therapy. During this time, patients will have dinner and continue to learn to have fun while remaining sober. Recreational activities can include enjoying the gym, relaxing by the pool, taking a walk, hanging out in the lounge area, getting a snack at the cafe, or spending time in the recreation center and athletic complex.
